At its May 18 meeting, the District 204 Board of Education voted to approve a new two-year contract for support staff.

Members of the Indian Prairie Classified Association (IPCA) approved their agreement last week. Teaching assistants and clerical staff with less than 20 years of service will see an average hourly increase of $0.24. IPCA members with more than 20 years will see an average hourly increase of $0.30. The hourly increase means starting salaries for teaching assistants will be $12 and clerical positions will start at $14.50.

The board also approved a 2.09 percent increase for the 2015-16 school year for administrators and all non-bargaining employees.

The board was hoping to also have a new contract to vote on for teachers, but members of the Indian Prairie Education Association (IPEA) voted against ratifying the deal. The vote, taken on Friday, was 15 percent in favor and 85 percent against the proposed two-year agreement.

The proposed agreement included a 3.27 percent increase in year one, and a 1.98 percent increase in year two. The agreement also called for the elimination of post-retirement insurance and the 6 percent increase teachers typically receive in their last year of teaching. Instead, teachers would have received a one-time payment after retiring.

"The association's bargaining team entered into negotiations seeking to come to a deal which is respectful of the teachers in Indian Prairie and the community. We look forward to continuing to negotiate so we can come to a deal that is fair and equitable for all," IPEA president Paul Gamboa said.

Negotiations are expected to begin again sometime this summer.
