Arin Carter named new director of John C. Dunham STEM Partnership School at Aurora University
Aurora University announced that Arin Carter has been named the director of the John C. Dunham STEM Partnership School. In this role, she will build on the successes of the school’s inaugural year and grow its groundbreaking teaching, curriculum and partnership model.
“Arin is a highly qualified educator with a passion for the STEM Partnership School vision,” said Executive Director of the AU Institute for Collaboration, Sherry Eagle. “I have observed her educational growth through the West Aurora school system and Aurora University. She will complement the strong teaching professionals at the school and support the collaboration of university faculty, corporate, not-for-profit and government partners in creating an exemplary learning environment for students.”
Carter has served as a third- and fourth-grade mathematics teacher at the STEM Partnership School since its opening in August 2014. Previously, she was a teacher in the West Aurora School District for 13 years. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education and a Master of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction from Aurora University, and a Master of Science in Educational Leadership from American College of Education.
“I am excited to continue working with the students, families and staff of the school,” said Carter. “In my 14 years of classroom experience, I have always looked for innovative ways to support and teach students. The way we work with professional teachers, university faculty, not-for-profit partners and corporate partners provides endless possibilities that enable students, families and educators to grow and learn collaboratively.”
“Arin Carter has brought expertise and collaboration into her classroom by drawing on AU’s community partners, faculty and innovative STEM laboratories,” said Chetna Patel, chair of physical sciences at AU and faculty liaison for the STEM school. “Her understanding of the vision for the STEM Partnership School will prepare our students for the future. As the faculty liaison to the STEM school, I have enjoyed working with her this year and I look forward to learning from her in her new role as director of the school.”
Carter’s hiring was recommended this morning by the STEM Partnership School’s Governing Board, comprised of leaders from each of the partner school districts and AU. The university then confirmed her appointment, effective July 1.
Ed Howerton, who has served as the director of the STEM school on an interim basis, will return to the position he previously held in the AU School of Education. In this role, he is responsible for building initiatives for AU education students.
The John C. Duham STEM Partnership School on the Aurora University campus serves students in third through eighth grades in the West Aurora School District 129, East Aurora School District 131 and Indian Prairie School District 204. Fifty students from Batavia School District 101 will join this fall, bringing the school to full capacity at 200 students. It is staffed through a unique professional development strategy that engages teachers from the partner districts as faculty.
