"This is one of those things you should do to ensure their safety." — Dr. Joseph Marek, cardiologist and founder of Young Hearts for Life
In 2009, District 204 partnered with Young Hearts for Life (YH4L) to offer biennial free cardiac screenings for all high school students. The partnership was formed after the district lost several students to sudden cardiac death. Since then, more than 23,000 students have undergone the quick and painless heart screening.
Each week, sudden cardiac death claims the lives of more than 60 young adults in the United States. YH4L has been a leader in the medical community to address this problem in the Chicago area. The YH4L screening program was founded by Dr. Joseph Marek in 2006, and is well known for its unique model that uses trained community volunteers to assist with the program. In District 204, more than 2,300 volunteers have made the screenings possible.
The Indian Prairie Educational Foundation has been a strong supporter, underwriting the cost of the program so parents can register their child for free.
Watch this month's Explore 204 to learn more and see the recent screening at Neuqua Valley High School.
Students at Metea Valley will have the opportunity to participate in a screening on January 26, and Waubonsie Valley will host the screening on April 20. More information will be emailed to parents in advance of the screening dates.
Explore 204 is generously sponsored by The Labs USA, which is a multisport fitness center located in Aurora. For more information, please visit www.thelabsusa.com
