Dear District 204 Community,
Thank you for your patience as we developed our Return to School plan for the second quarter. We shared our plans last night with the Board of Education. I invite you to view the video from the meeting and the presentation slides.
Our plan for the second quarter is to move to a hybrid model starting the week of November 2. Parents will have the option to continue with remote learning or have their child receive in-person instruction at certain times during the week. We are trying to keep students with their same teacher through the end of the first semester, but that may not always be possible due to staffing limits. It's important to note that this shift to hybrid represents a change for all students in the scheduled time when they interact "live" with their teacher, whether they continue remotely or select in-person instruction. However, all students in kindergarten through twelfth grade will still receive the state's requirement for a minimum of 2.5 hours of "live" instruction per day.
Below are summaries of the plan by level. Please visit our Return to School page for more complete details on the plans and to review the schedules for delivery of instruction.
Early Childhood: Students who select in-person will be divided into two groups and come to school two days a week either in the morning or the afternoon. On the days students are not at school they will complete activities at home. Students who continue with remote learning will receive packets from their teacher for at home activities.
Elementary School: Thirty-one classrooms across the district are starting a hybrid pilot the week of October 12. Students who select in-person instruction will come to school two mornings a week from 9 am to 11:30 am. The current Monday schedule will remain with all students in remote learning. For students who continue with remote learning and when in-person students are not at school, there will be a combination of synchronous and asynchronous instruction. Beginning November 5, the pilot will expand to include all elementary schools.
Middle School: Students who select in-person instruction will come to school from 8 am to 12:59 pm two days a week. The current Monday schedule will remain with all students in remote learning. For students who continue with remote learning and when in-person students are not at school, there will be a combination of synchronous and asynchronous instruction.
High School: Students who select in-person instruction will come to school on select Mondays from 7:25 am to 2:05 pm based on last name and grade level. Remote learning will continue as is Tuesday through Friday for all students. For students who continue with remote learning and when in-person students are not at school, Monday's schedule will be a combination of synchronous and asynchronous instruction.
Below is the schedule to transition to the hybrid model:
Week of October 5: Survey parents for selection
Week of October 12: Elementary pilot in select schools
Week of November 2: Eighth, eleventh and twelfth grades
November 5: Early childhood through second grade
Week of November 9: Sixth grade
Week of November 16: Third, fourth, fifth, seventh, ninth and tenth grades
Our plan follows the DuPage County Health Department's school metrics guidance. At the current level of moderate community transmission, the health department's recommendation is "some students participate in virtual and some participate in in-person learning." We will continue to monitor public health guidance and will return to full remote learning if the health department's level changes from moderate to substantial community transmission.
We received almost 12,000 responses to our recent survey asking parents about their remote learning experience. Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback. One of the questions we asked was with appropriate safety measures do you feel comfortable sending your child to school for in-person instruction. Fifty-four percent of parents said they felt comfortable sending their child to school. You can view the survey results on our website.
The safety of our students and staff remains a top priority. Many modifications have been made to address health and safety in our schools. Please watch a video from our Health and Safety Committee to see the changes that have been implemented.
We are excited to welcome our students back to our classrooms. Please continue to do your part to prevent the transmission of COVID in our community. We must work together to successfully return our students to school. Thank you for your continued support.
