From helping students bring their creative writing to life in the Publishing Center to cutting out thousands of Labels for Education to co-chairing the successful annual children's clothing, toy and equipment resale and much more, Mary Barnard has been helping teachers, students and parents succeed at McCarty Elementary School. Because of her dedication and commitment, Mary is being recognized as the District 204 BMO Harris Bank Volunteer of the Month.
"There are so many wonderful volunteers at McCarty that are deserving recognition," Mary said. "I appreciate the acknowledgement and am happy that McCarty will benefit from the generous donation from BMO Harris."
Mary has volunteered in District 204 since 2009 when her daughter, Cecilia, was 3 years old and attending Prairie Children Preschool. She has volunteered at McCarty since 2011, where she also helps in the classroom and in the LMC— volunteers on Field Days and with the annual PTA fundraiser— makes treats for teacher appreciation— and helps out at nearly every school event.
"The reward for me as a volunteer – I enjoy it," she said. "I have fun interacting with the students, teachers and other parents and made many friends."
Mary said that children watch their parents and learn by their actions. Today, her daughter is in fourth grade, and she enjoys helping out at school, too, just like her mom.
"I believe it's important for parents to volunteer because it takes everyone participating to make a school and its PTA successful, for events and activities to run smoothly, but most importantly, to be representative of ALL the students," she said. "There is a great energy that is created when you volunteer – at McCarty it's called 'Mustang Pride!'"
BMO Harris Bank is helping District 204 recognize one volunteer each month who has generously given his or her time to support District 204's students and schools.
