Linda Young has volunteered in District 204 for many years since her college-age children, Shawn and Samantha, were in elementary school. Four years ago, she was working at YMCA's Safe and Sound Program held at Longwood Elementary School that provides before and after school care for students. With no children of her own in the school, she started volunteering at Longwood because she wanted to be part of the community of the families who she was serving in the YMCA program.
Young is now a weekly volunteer in the Longwood LMC where she helps check-in and shelve books, assists children in finding their selections and also helps with the evening book fairs. She is a member of the Longwood PTA and helps with many school activities. Because of her dedication and commitment, Young is being recognized as the District 204 BMO Harris Bank Volunteer of the Month.
The nominations noted that Young is a treasured volunteer who gives both her time and her heart and is well loved by everyone no matter if they are a staff member, parent or student. The feeling is mutual.
"Of all the places I have helped at, this place is like no other," she said. "I have met so many amazing kids, parents and staff."
Young grew up in Lemont, Ill., where her family was very involved in volunteering. When her children were in elementary, middle and high school, she helped in the classroom, in the office, and with field trips and parties. Although her children never attended Longwood, through volunteering, she has become part of the Longwood family.
"I have found a place that makes me smile every time I pull up to school," she said. "When we volunteer, we are there to support the staff, the children and families. When children see their parents or community members helping, they know people care about them. When we invest our time and our gifts, we are building up the next generation."
BMO Harris Bank is helping District 204 recognize one volunteer each month who has generously given his or her time to support District 204's students and schools. To celebrate these outstanding volunteers, BMO Harris Bank is donating $1,000 to the volunteer's school. To nominate an outstanding volunteer, visit http://www.ipsd.org/Subpage.aspx/Volunteer.
