Every Tuesday and Thursday, from 3:00 to 5:30 pm, you will find Bill Nowag at Fischer Middle School volunteering for the Vex Robotics program. Bill is now in his fourth year bringing his extensive knowledge of mechanics to the building of robotics. Because of his dedication, enthusiasm, and willingness to lend his knowledge of engineering principles to the robotics program, Bill Nowag is being honored as the September BMO Harris Bank District 204 Volunteer of the Month.
After a full day of work, Bill arrives at Fischer Middle School excited and ready to help in any way possible. Bill’s enthusiasm is contagious and he always manages to bring a smile to everyone in the room. He pushes students to do their best and instills the values of teamwork and cooperation. He firmly believes in teaching students to find their own solutions to problems and only steps in when necessary, helping students learn to troubleshoot their own.
In addition to Bill's extensive knowledge, he also brings a truck full of machinery in order to cut various robotic parts. This may not sound like much, but to the students in robotics, it means everything. The power tools Bill brings would be otherwise unavailable and offers immediate access to cut and modify parts allowing students to build robots quickly and inexpensively.
"Bill's commitment and dedication to the robotics program at Fischer has been so impressive," said Principal Jennifer Nonnemacher. "He has modeled and taught the engineering and design principles while guiding students to demonstrate ownership and autonomy in their work. As a principal, I am very grateful to Bill for giving countless hours of his own time. We could not have accomplished what we have with the Fischer Robotics team without his help."
