The BMO Harris Bank District 204 Volunteer of the Month is being awarded to husband and wife duo AJ and TC Collier from Waubonsie Valley High School.
AJ and TC have been instrumental in overseeing the after-school tutoring program at Waubonsie Valley High School for the past three years. They have devoted their time two nights a week to tutor academically at-risk African American freshmen students. Additionally, they have helped to organize peer tutors, other parent tutors, and have even expanded the program to include Saturday tutoring sessions.
Principal Jason Stipp noted that AJ and TC were dedicated to finding a solution to help in lowering the achievement gap for students. “AJ and TC realize the importance of additional tutoring support for students and have created a volunteer network to support incoming freshmen so they have success from the start,” Stipp said. “The Colliers have also been instrumental in leading the PAGES parent group at Waubonsie Valley, which works to support lessening the achievement gap for minority students. They have been selfless and diligent in this effort.”
