On June 23, the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) and Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) released guidance for school district’s on safely reopening schools this fall. The guidance includes information on in-person learning, restrictions on the number of people who can gather, social distancing, wearing face masks, transportation, and other safety measures for students and staff.

State Superintendent of Education Dr. Carmen Ayala said that schools should prioritize in-person instruction while following the guidelines. She acknowledged that creative scheduling will be needed to meet the goal and described a potential school environment that will look different.

District 204’s Return to School Task Force has been working on a plan to safely reopen our schools. The goal is to support a comprehensive educational program for the 2020-21 school year within the current guidelines provided by local, state, and federal health and safety officials.

District administrators understand that community members have many questions about what school will look like this fall. We don’t have all the answers to those questions as this document was released to school districts at the same time it was released to the public. Therefore, we kindly ask for your patience as our staff thoroughly reviews this detailed guidance and implements the suggestions into our district’s own return to school plan.

More information on the plan being developed will be shared at the July 13 Board of Education meeting.
